This project required the development of an agricultural anaerobic digester, fuel conditioning, electrical power generation and the use of engine heat to accelerate the digestion process. Dairy manure is delivered to a central collection site and diluted, as required, to 12% solids content. It is then introduced to the anaerobic digester at a rate of 39,750 m3/day for approximately 17 days. Digestion occurs at 35oC producing 1,895 m3/day of methane rich gas (65% CH4:35% CO2). The gas is conditioned to reduce miscible salts and hydrogen sulfide and then combusted in a Caterpillar IC engine. The process produces 108 kW and 597,000 Btu per hour. The electrical energy is used throughout the dairy and the heat is used to pre-heat the manure prior to digestion and to heat water to clean the milking parlors
