Bentley-Simonson, Inc., (BSI) operates oil and gas production facilities located in seven fields across Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. Gas from nearly 200 wells is processed and compressed at BSI’s onsite gas-treatment plant to meet natural-gas pipeline specifications, leaving off-specification gases that have a high Btu content but are typically of little economic value.
Faced with the need to properly dispose of these overhead vapors, BSI is using the gases to fuel multiple Ingersoll-Rand 70 kW microturbines that generate nearly all the base-load electricity needed to power onsite oil production equipment. Operating a microturbine on an energy resource that would otherwise be wasted provides BSI with significant energy savings, avoids environmental penalties, and offers a quick payback. Simple payback on the micro turbine equipment ranged from 1 to just over 2 years dependent on heat recovery. Some projects received a distributed generation incentive from the California Energy Commission.
